frequently asked questions (FAQs)

natural gas conversion

Want to find out more about the Newtown and Newberry Oaks Natural Gas Conversion project? How can natural gas provide the affordable comfort your home deserves? The answers to these questions and more can be found below.

If your home is in the Newtown or Newberry Oaks natural gas conversion area, and you request natural gas service during our conversion project, you will not be responsible for up-front expenses to extend natural gas service to your home. All conversion costs are included in the Area Expansion Program (AEP) charge as approved by the Florida Public Services Commission (FPSC). If you choose propane service with a different provider and opt to switch to natural gas after our conversion project, you will be responsible for all conversion costs.
The FPSC AEP charge helps cover the costs of bringing natural gas services to your community. Your specific AEP charge is a monthly fee of $2.83 per therm, and your total AEP charge will vary based on how much natural gas you use each month. For example: a customer who uses 20 therms per month would see an AEP charge of $56.51 per month, included on your monthly bill. This charge begins after your Florida Public Utilities natural gas meter is set and will be included on your monthly bill for the following 72 months. At the conclusion of the 72-month period, the AEP charge will be dropped from monthly statements, leading to additional customer savings.

Most propane customers who convert to natural gas services through FPU will experience savings on their monthly energy costs.  The chart below provides sample natural gas bills for residential customers in your area based on current propane usage. This information does not include applicable taxes, does not represent an actual bill and should only be used for estimation purposes.

Crews are already in your neighborhood working on the infrastructure needed for this conversion project. Conversion of individual gas service for homes began on July 22.

If you do not wish Florida Public Utilities to convert your appliances to natural gas, you may contact a propane company of your choice to have a tank installed. Please remember not all areas permit propane tanks, and there may be additional costs for remaining on propane, including the cost for the commodity. If you want to remain on the FPU distribution system, you must convert your appliances to natural gas.

For specific conversion-related questions, please contact us at 1.888.393.5190. For all other matters, please contact customer service at 800.427.7712.

To report a gas leak, first relocate yourself and all others to a safe location at least 500 feet from any suspected leak and call for emergency help (800.427.7712 or 911).

While renewable natural gas and conventional natural gas are used similarly to fuel homes, businesses and transportation, they are developed using completely different resources and collection technologies. The RNG Process has four primary stages:

  1. Collect – Collect organic waste from various sources
  2. Capture – Capture greenhouse gases from organic waste
  3. Clean – Clean and condition biogas for use in existing infrastructure and appliances
  4. Consume – Consume in homes, businesses and transportation

Renewable natural gas is part of the solution to better waste management practices. RNG captures and repurposes methane from waste before it escapes into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases are captured and converted into renewable natural gas that can be used in any natural gas application. By utilizing waste, rather than simply discarding it, RNG helps improve land use, protect water resources and reduce fossil fuel consumption.
